Personal offsets were initially based on the idea of offsetting our extensive driving habits. An Offset Provider would take the total miles driven and divide that by the miles-per-gallon rating (based on the car type) to figure out the approximate yearly emissions. This number can then be matched with a corresponding offset-generating Project to cancel out the effect that driving has on the environment.
Though offsets for cars are still quite common, other Offet Types have become common in recent years.
