Approximately 16,000 commercial aircraft currently service
passengers around the world. During a typical year, this enormous fleet
emits over 600 million tons of co2 into the atmosphere.
On an individual basis, flights are very
similar to cars as far their per-mile emissions are concerned. The
difference is that people easily fly long distances which would rarely be
traveled by car. For instance, a roundtrip flight from New York to Paris covers over 7,000 miles, more than
half of the average American motorist's yearly mileage. Just one or two
significant flights each year can double your Carbon Footprint very quickly.
For this
reason, the effect of flights on Global Warming has become more of a concern in
recent years.
